Smith Street plan slammed

17 Mar 2004

Richmond MLC Dick Wynne has derided a plan by developer Banco to build three towers and a sprawling supermarket on Smith Street.

Richmond MLC Dick Wynne has derided a plan by developer Banco to build three towers and a sprawling supermarket on Smith Street. Mr Wynne said the application was "an attempt (by Banco) to selectively use one of the principles of Melbourne 2030 for its own objectives". He said the proposal was too large for the street, would have a terrible effect on surrounding heritage buildings and would overshadow and overlook neighbouring properties. "Little Oxford Street, which is only about six metres wide, is simply too narrow to take the volume of deliveries, traffic and residential and business parking."

The Oxford Street Action Group will meet next Monday, March 22, to discuss moves to oppose the proposal. The meeting is at 7.30pm, upstairs at Vibe Cafe, 123 Smith Street, Fitzroy.
