Late report hurts protesters

19 May 2004

CAMPAIGNERS have urged the state's heritage umpire to adjourn this week's hearing on the Royal Park Psychiatric Hospital, saying the site developers' late submission has disadvantaged them.

Royal Park Protection Society convenor Julianne Bell said the group had asked the Heritage Council for a one-month adjournment after the site's developer, Village Park Consortium (VPC), submitted its lengthy report weeks after the April 20 deadline.

The council will consider whether to disqualify the document at the hearing.

Last December, the council found that the area around the hospital had state-level significance, and provisionally listed it. The State Government appealed the ruling.

A permanent listing could have implications for VPC, which has already begun building display homes within the heritage area.
