Why is this a significant planning issue?
A benchmark for unfettered development in the inner metropolitan area?
Following on the heels of a string of controversial developments in the City of Yarra area that includes the ‘Cheese Grater’ in Fitzroy and the recently approved Becton development in Carlton, the Smith Street development by Jan & Manton architects could become a benchmark for unfettered development in the inner metropolitan area.
Smith Street is a unique precinct with a colourful history that needs careful planning to balance the preservation of its past with development fit for its future. It is earmarked for heritage listing by the National Trust, and the adjoining Foy and Gibson complex is already heritage listed.
The Collingwood Action Group has consulted experts in the areas of architecture, design, planning, heritage, conservation, public relations and mediation. Concerns are now growing that the outcomes of this process will set a major precedent for future development along Smith Street, designated as a Major Activity Centre under Melbourne 2030, the State Government’s metropolitan planning strategy. Melbourne’s status as the world’s most liveable cities is under threat.
