Yarra Council finally refuses monster development proposal

8 Feb 2005

Yarra Council finally refuses monster development proposal from Banco for Smith and Little Oxford Streets Collingwood and asks the new Planning Minister Rob Hulls to 'call in' the planning application if Banco goes to VCAT.

Yarra cited six grounds for refusing the application for the massive mixed-use development – including issues relating to heritage, energy efficiency, car parking, urban design, local traffic impact, vehicle loading and unloading, and amenity for future and existing residents.

The record 1500 objectors to the proposal have been formally notified by Council.

The full report setting out reasons for the refusal can be accessed from City of Yarra's website (www.yarracity.vic.gov.au).

Banco can appeal the decision to VCAT, and has 60 days to do so. Meanwhile Yarra has taken early steps to request the Planning Minister 'call in' the Application in the event that Banco appeals to VCAT. Developer Banco first lodged the application with Yarra Council way back in December 2003.
